Unifi Pay Nothing #KhabarBaik Promo: Should you get it?

Have you heard about the Unifi Pay Nothing #KhabarBaik promotion?

Yes, that plan which offers you free broadband internet for 3-months (or less) if you extend your Unifi contract now (it began on 1 October 2019).

According to adverts, extending your current contract by 24-months (two years) will result in you paying nothing from the day you extend your contract until 31st December 2019.

It’s quite a deal to be honest but let’s look into the pros and cons.

THE DISADVANTAGES OF THE UNIFI PAY NOTHING #KHABARBAIK

As I understand, the deal is to encourage consumers like myself to extend their stay with Unifi amid ferocious fibre internet competition from others like Maxis, Celcom, and TIME.

Personally, I am never a fan of contracts with telcos.  I think they are looped sided arrangements that can benefit the telco. In the case of the Unifi Pay Nothing #KhabarBaik promotion, I feel that being tied to a contract at this time isn’t a great idea.

This is due to the fact that internet prices had fallen a lot within the past two years. That said, I can only see the internet prices going even lower with 5G rolling in.

If you are tied to a 24-month contract, you won’t get to enjoy the new lower charges.  This means less saving in this ‘difficult’ economy.

TM, which operates Unifi, may however compensate you with faster speeds if they are selling their new packages at lower prices. This had happened in 2018, and it may happen again.

However, faster speeds do translate into the need to upgrade your fibre hardware and that adds to additional cost.  My experience tells me that TM will only upgrade your hardware if an extension contract is done.

Also, you need to note that early termination of the Unifi Pay Nothing #KhabarBaik promotion contract will require you to fulfill payment for the whole tenure.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THE PROMO?

Of course the promotion means that you’d be saving three months worth of internet bill.

Not only that, some of Unifi’s older packages are actually much better and cheaper than their new ones.  This is specifically true for the ones that got themselves boosted in 2018.

For a reference, the new year end 2019 Unifi home packages are below.

Unifi Pay Nothing #KhabarBaik

A friend of mine was upgraded to 500Mbps last year when Pakatan Harapan formed he government of Malaysia.  As you may have remembered, TM boosted the internet speeds of all their existing customers without charging them extra.  New customers were given cheaper options to sign up.

Well, today, that friend of mine is only paying a mere RM220 (with tax) for his 500Mbps speed and Unifi TV. Cheap? You bet!

That said, extending your contract means that you get to enjoy the same plan you are currently having for another 24-months.  If you are like my friend, then you should probably sign up.

However, if you feel you don’t need fast speeds, that also require an upgrade of your hardware, then the boosted speeds may not be something you’d like.

I’ve upgraded mine because I’m paying about RM129 (without tax) for 300Mbps, so I really can’t complain.
