I recently bought and installed a China made double DIN car stereo system.

As you have read, a couple of weeks ago I decided to upgrade my wife’s ride. Not only did I respray her whole car, I also decided to install a new car audio system.

The upgrade of the audio system was a last minute decision but I figured since she doesn’t want to buy a new ride, I’d better make the current one the best it can be.

SPECIFICATIONS OF THE CHINA DOUBLE DIN CAR STEREO

Knowing my wife, I decided to risk getting her a cheap China made double DIN car stereo system.

Just like me, my wife doesn’t really bother about how huge the bass sound is, or if the stereo has thousands of functions. The important thing was that the car stereo produced sound, and could play MP3 and CD.

It was also important that the stereo could be connected to AUX and Bluetooth as we both listen to Spotify nowadays.

That said, the China made double DIN stereo system I got my wife cost RM299. The brand was Vellfire, which is really unknown.

It came with the following specifications:

Supports MP3, MP4, MP5, WMA playback
Supports Bluetooth
Support AUX
Can play CD and DVD
Can play radio and has over 20 memory slots for channel
Is touch screen enable
Has a micro-SD slot and a USB slot
Supports mirror-link
Supports the Apple iPod
Reverse camera supported

As a bonus, the place where I bought the China made double DIN threw in a reverse camera and charged me RM399 inclusive of installation.

I figured this was quite a bargain, so I agreed to have the audio system installed.

INSTALLATION OF THE DOUBLE DIN CAR STEREO

The installation of the Double DIN car stereo system was quite tedious. I tried to learn as much as I can from what was done, but with little space to see, it was not easy.

Eventually the technician opened this, that and connected this and that, and the whole car was connected to the new system within an hour.

The technician tested the sound and reverse camera, and gave me the thumbs up to inform everything was good to go.

Yes, there was an installation manual, but it went missing after the installation. I think the technician threw it away. That’s my best bet.

So, I really can’t say much about what the technician did. All I can say is that the installation looked quite easy, and it required tactfulness when opening the original car components.

I searched Youtube about installations of stereo players and it doesn’t look that hard.

EXPERIENCE USING THE CHINA MADE DOUBLE DIN CAR STEREO

So far, the Double DIN car strereo system has not caused any problems and does work as it should.

However, I must tell you that I did return to the shop within 24 hours of the installation as the problems below occurred.

The technicians and shop owners wasted no time in replacing my unit with a new one. The new unit is what my wife is currently using in her car.

This new unit worked as it should without any problems, but a couple of months, it also failed. This time, the new unit kept on although the car engine was completely dead and the ignition was pulled out. To add to the situation, the reverse camera also failed to function.

The fix was easy. All you need to do is poke a tiny reset button on the top left, and all was good.

Anyway, for the price, there’s really nothing to complain about as hick-ups are expected.

CHEAP DOUBLE DIN CAR STEREO OPTIONS

My checks online reveal that these China made double DIN car stereos cost less than RM299. In fact, some are priced just about RM189 on Lazada. Of course brands are set aside since there’s plenty of unknown brands.

Gearbest also sells China double DIN car stereos with prices starting at USD68 (around RM230+).

Of course buying from online stores means that you need to install the audio systems yourself but videos like below from Youtube can really help.

If you aren’t tech savvy or you are not confident enough to fix the system, then you can just grab one from the nearest accesory store. I saw there was quite a few sold around town.

SHOULD YOU BUY ONE?

Personally, if you are just looking to upgrade the audio system of your car, this China made double DIN car streo system is worth it.

Remember however that the cheap rice does come with some short-comings like a shorter warranty, an unknown brand name and a very ‘normal’ display on the LCD screen panel.

In terms of sound, I can’t really differentiate if it’s better or worst because sound is sound to me, particularly when it’s coming from the car audio system.
